TWELVE SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC, THEIR CLASSIFICATION AND THEIR INFLUENCE

The circle of space surrounding the earth and measuring 360 degrees of celestial longitude is referred to as the Zodiac. It is an imaginary belt in the Heavens. It is 15 degrees wide in which the planets travel. It is the path in the middle of which the sun appears to more around the earth, called Ecliptic.

The Zodiac is divided into 12 equal parts. They are
1. Aries---Mesha
2. Tauras---Vrushaba
3. Gemini---Mithuna
4. Cancer---Karkata
5. Leo---Simha
6. Virgo---Kanya
7. Libra---Thulam
8. Scorpio---Vrischika
9. Saggittarius---Dhanus
10. Capricorn---Makara
11. Aquarius---Kumbha
12. Pisces--- Meena

Each of these is a solar mansion otherwise called a sign or a rasi and each extends to exactly 30 degrees. Each sign has derived its name from its resemblance to the group of constellations found in and around the Zodiac. These signs may be classified broadly into thirteen groups depending on their influences on animate and inanimate objects. They are:

(1) Positive and Negative Signs
(2) Northern & Southern Equinoctial, Tropical Signs
(3) Fiery, Earthy Airy & Watery signs
(4) Movable, Fixed & Common signs
(5) Fruitful or barren signs
(6) Mute signs
(7) Violent signs
(8) Human signs
(9) Voice signs
(10) Bestial or Four legged signs
(11) Dual signs
(12) Bicorporeal or double bodied
(13) Short & Long ascension signs

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SIGNS

The signs from Aries(Mesha) onwards are alternative positive and negative. They are sometimes reffered to as masculine(or day signs) and feminine (or night signs) respectively. Thus the odd signs namely , Aries(Mesha),Gemini(Mithuna),Leo(Simha), Libra(Thulam),Sagittarius(Dhanus) and Aquarius(Kumbha) are positive(or Masculine); the even signs viz, Taurus(Vrishaba), Cancer(Karkata), Virgo(Kanya), Scorpio(Vrischika), Capricorn(Makara) and Pisces(Meena) are negative (or Female).

The positive signs denote an assertive, bold, expressive, active and offensive nature. They give determination, power of will and force. On the other hand the negative signs show a passive, receptive, defensive and a somewhat conciliatory disposition. There is a tendency for the positive signs to be more self-expressive and less passive in their reactions and for the negative signs to be more self-expressive and less outgoing and spontaneous.

A positive sign as Ascendant indicates that the native is more generally fortunate in his undertakings than a negative sign does. The negative signs are weak and feminine on account of passive qualities.

If the lagna falls in a male sign and other testimonials also support, then even a lady born in a modest family, will have masculine appearance and qualities. But if the lagna falls in a male sign occupied by feminine, planets or if the lord of lagna occupies a female sign, he may be a male with feminine qualities, appearance and character, etc.

If the sign on the cusp of the 5th house falls in a masculine sign, if the 5th lord is a masculine planet and is in a masculine sign, etc., most of the offsprings will be boys. If these happen to be feminine, then the offsprings will be girls. This is a general rule.

Positive signs on the cusp of the ascendant give vitality. Negative signs are not so vigorous, unless a strong masculine planet is very near the cusp of the Ascendant.

NORTHEN AND SOUTHERN SIGNS

The first six signs of the Zodiac, namely, Mesha, Rishaba, Mithuna, Karkata, Simha and Kanya( i.e, Aries to Virgo) are called Northern signs, as they are to the north of the celestial.

ON PLANETARY TRANSIT
Varahamihira in the first verse, in all humanity craves the indulgence of his readers for his chattering about a subject in which great sages like Maandavya have written and in which all people are interested. --------------------------------------------------1

”Having listened to the words of Maandavya, at once noble in sentiment and dignified in style, if the public listen to me, it is like a man turning from his chaste wife to a prostitute: --------2

A general statement about the effects of transits of planets is made at the outset:

If the Sun transits the 6th,3rd,and 10th places }
If the moon transits the 3rd,10th,6th,7th and1st }
If Jupiter transits the 7th,9th,2nd & 5th places }
If mercury transits the 6th,2nd,4th,10th & 8th }
If mars and Saturn transits the 6th and 3rd places }
If all planets transit the 10th place}

During all these occasions good results will follow. But if venus passes the 6th,7th and 10th places from chandra lagna he will inspire fear like tiger.”

BENEFICIAL PLANET

A planet is beneficial :
I. If the planet is a natural benefic;
II. As the lord of a benevolent star;
III. By having an excellent Bhava;
IV. By occupying a good sign;
V. By rising away from the Sun and transiting;
VI. By acquiring more strength among the Ashtakavarga ( the eight sources of energy the planets are subjected to);
VII. Owing to strength acquired by transiting from a debilitated to an exalted sign and
VIII. By reaching the most exalted sign.

MALEFIC PLANET

The lord of the Dasa is a malefic:
I. If the planet is a natural malefic;
II. If it is occupying the 6th,8th or 12th place;
III. If it is the lord of the 6th,8th or 12th sign;
IV. If it is in an inimical,debilitated or the 7th house;
V. If it is in an occupying a trine or quarant of the janma Lagna(Ascendant);
VI. If it is in retrograde motion going back from one sign to the next behind in an accelerated way;
VII. If it is in retrograde motion in the same sign;
VIII. If it reaches its weakest place.

The Moon can be in any these 108 padas at the time of birth of a person and the Moon’s rasi(sign) is determined accordingly and this is called Moon’s Lagna.This is of vital importance and the planetary transits in terms of this lagna and their effects on the native have to be interpreted in the light of the planetary Dasa which is running at the time of prediction.
Yet another clue, which by experience has been found very useful, may also be mentioned : When a person is having a beneficial Dasabhukti a good planet’s transit will bring salutary results; but such good transit when the Dasabhukti is not beneficial will be of no avail.Naturally, it is of paramount importance to find out if the person at the time of prediction is having a good or bad planetary transit period and also the strength or weakness of the lord of the Dasa running at the time. Therefore the first task is to find out whether the lord of the Dasa is a benefic or a malefic.

GENERAL RULES

Further, in evaluating the results accruing to the person by the transit of the planets, a few hints and clause will be given.If only these are borne in mind, prediction given in the light of planetary transits will not prove false.

Each star is divided into 4 padas and the 27 stars constitute 108 padas and they are divided among the 12 signs(Rasis) equally,i.e.9 padas each, which is indicated in the following Tabular coloumn:

ENSURING ACCURACY OF PREDICTION

Prediction is to be made by thus ascertaining the strength of the planets and knowing the places from the Moon where good results will accure by the transit of the planets and those where bad results will flow, and knowing that good will come when the planets pass through stars other than the 3rd,5th,7th and 9th constellations from the janma,Anujanma and Trijanma stars* and bad results will come when the planets transit through the forbidden stars just mentioned and in retrogression in eclipse.

NOTE:- *The star of birth is Janma, the 9th star from it is Anujanma star and the 9th from the latter in Trijanma star.

Any prediction made about the transit of the planets without ascertaining the strength of the planets,as stated above,will prove false by experience.The strength of a planet is to be determined by finding if some of the conditions stated above are present and not by expecting the fulfillment of all the qualifications.The results,good or bad , mentioned in the following versus are not to be taken literally but understood in a general way,for experience keeps a dear school and mere maxims do not go far in life’s adventure.

QUERY

Let us assume that a person’s birth star is the third pada of UTTARAASHADHA. Then his Chandra lagna is Capricorn which is also called the Janma Rasi.
